Sleep Vs Cheer
Background
It’s a crispy fall Friday in 2019 at Canton High School in Massachusetts, the weather has a bit of a chill from the new fall feel but it isn’t cold enough for a jacket. Olivia knows her best friend Grace hasn’t been sleeping well, will today be another battle of Sleep Vs Cheer? As the students rush at the multiple sets of doors to ensure they all arrive to first period on time, Olivia manages to enter the building with her backpack on, holding two medium iced caramel swirls with milk from Dunkin Donuts. One for her, one for her best friend Grace. Olivia makes her way down the crowded hall when she arrives at her physics classroom taught by her cheer coach, Ms.Parker. She takes a seat at her assigned seat next to Grace and places one of the coffees in front of her.
Friday Morning
Grace: (Sleepy) Morning Liv
Olivia: (Cheerfully) Good morning! Happy Friday, happy gameday!
Grace: Can you be any more excited this morning? (Grace rolls her eyes) Thanks for the coffee though.
Olivia: You’re welcome! Thank god it’s finally Friday. This week has been going on forever!
Grace: Tell me about it, I’ve been running on four hours of sleep from the past two nights.
Olivia: Oh no, really, still? Your migraines are still hurting you?
Grace: Yes, which makes the days unbearable but nights have become worse because I simply cannot fall asleep.
Olivia: Oh man I’m so sorry grace, maybe the nurse will let you take a little nap?
Grace: I should be okay right now, especially with this coffee,
Olivia: It is the best part of fridays, Dunkin Donuts fridays!
Grace: I love how you started this tradition, especially when it falls on a Friday where we have class together and you bring me one too.
(The girls giggle together as the bell rings)
Ms. Parker: Alright class let’s settle down today we will be jumping back in talking about net forces.
(The girls listen through class and eventually the bell rings)
Olivia: See you at lunch
Grace: No you won’t, we don’t have lunch together today, I have first lunch.
Olivia: Oh shoot your right I have third lunch today, ok i’ll see you at the end of the day, meet outside Mr.Turner’s room?
Grace: Sure, Bye.
Olivia: Bye!
The End of the Day
Olivia: Grace! Hurry up! (Girls begin there walk out of school)
Grace: (Yawning) Sorry, I’m moving like a zombie today.
Olivia: Still super tired?
Grace: Ya I layed down at the nurses for twenty minutes but it didn’t really help.
Olivia: Oh no, maybe you can take a little nap before the game tonight?
Grace: Ya I might try I don’t have too long though.
Olivia: Better than nothing though, oh what color bows are we wearing tonight?
Grace: I think white with the green paw print.
Olivia: Ok, cool see you later! Have a nice nap!
Grace: I’ll try!
(Hours later Olivia arrives at the game and has began warming up)
Game Time
Olivia: Grace where have you been? And what is that?
Grace: My hydroflask, filled with two red bulls.
Olivia: Two omg! Did you not take a nap?
Grace: Nope I still couldn’t fall asleep. I feel like i’m in a constant war of Sleep Vs Cheer.
Olivia: Oh no I hope you’re okay for the game. Thats a good way to put it, Sleep Vs Cheer!
Grace: I’ll be fine.
(The first half of the football game proceeds smoothly, Canton is winning by 14 points)
Grace: I am not ready for halftime right now.
Olivia: Me neither, we have been doing so many stunts this game.
Grace: I know I am getting even more tired.
Ms.Parker: Girls head on out to the center of the field.
(The whole team runs out and makes it to their spots)
(Music begins)
(Grace enters her stunt and is so tired she slipped through her bases hand, causing her to fall to the ground, missing her stunt and messing up the routine)
(Team finishes the routine and returns to get water)
Grace: That. Was. So. Embarrassing.
Olivia: It’s no big deal, it happens all the time.
Grace: Not to me, it’s because I am so tired, I wish I could fall asleep.
Five years into the Future
(Grace and Olivia are hanging out at Grace’s house, Looking at old pictures)
Olivia: Gosh look at what little babies we were!
Grace: I know it’s crazy how much we’ve changed.
Olivia: Awe look at us at the football game from junior year!
Grace: (Grasps) That was the game I fell during halftime.
Olivia: What? I don’t remember that.
Grace: Yes you do, it was before I started taking Good Night Sleep Tight sleeping gummies.
Olivia: Oh I remember that time, that was when you walked around like a zombie all day running on two hours of sleep.
Grace: Yep. That was absolutely terrible.
Olivia: I’m so glad you found sleeping gummies that help you.
Grace: Me too, I think it’s the magnesium in them that has really helped me.
Olivia: Wow that’s cool they put that in a gummy, maybe I should try when I can’t see.
Grace: You definitely should.
